Edit Storyline Very much like the other two Bolshoi versions choreographed by Grigorovich. However, this is the only one of the three versions shot on widescreen and HD, so the colors are far more vivid and the picture practically jumps out at you, despite the fact that it's not in 3-D. The same sets (or exact duplicates of them) are used, but they don't look as shabby as in the earlier Bolshoi versions. The costumes are only very slightly different. Two minor changes have been made to the choreography. In the second act, the Nutcracker Prince and the Mouse King (who does not die onscreen in this production) do not descend through a trap door in the floor. Instead, the Nutcracker Prince chases the Mouse King offstage and returns a few minutes later triumphantly holding the King's crown. The end is also slightly different. I like it, but I can't understand why Trepak dance here is so absurd. That was so beautiful. Think of how hard it must be to even find the people theyve used. Nice sound production (the harp was right in front of the listener, for example) and good camera editing - giving us many of the best angles to view a sequence from; on the ballet proper I was observing how all the moves and leaps were basically meaningless, and I wondered why (and I wonder if it is still that way. and I concluded a few things - dance may have still have been in early development then (same goes for art in general) hence the lack of message, other than a depiction of general happiness and content, therefore the future of dance would imbue more meaning into moves and leaps; another related conclusion is that the moves and leaps were not heart-driven - and that is a choreographic issue - perhaps the answer is in letting the dancers choose their moves in an improvisatory manner (though chaos would be an issue. the reasoning being that they do whatever moves them the most in regards to a scene, thereby attaining both maximum impact and meaning...

Imagine how grueling the rehearsals for this was. I feel like this version of sugar plum was choreographed to be excessively hard. Was it really necessary for Italian fouettes, fouettes, AND turning hops en pointe in the MIDDLE of the variation? Not the continuous ones because those make sense musically but the sequence prior. She's a lovely dancer and she did a great job with what Satan choreographed for her. Ballet like professional ice skating are both some of the most demanding athletic disciplines out there. So few ever reach this this level of perfection. “If you think this looks easy, its not!” -My mom.
